Now Seeking Applications: Associate Editor, Parenting for High Potential
The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) seeks applicants for the position of Associate Editor for Parenting for High Potential (PHP), an award-winning quarterly magazine written especially for families of high-ability learners. PHP focuses on practical strategies backed by research to nurture the whole gifted child at home, in school, and in the community.
The Associate Editor is a volunteer position responsible for supporting the acquisition, editorial, and production processes for PHP. The Associate Editor assists in recruiting authors and soliciting articles; making recommendations regarding acceptance or rejection of manuscripts; working with authors, NAGC staff, and the Editor-in-Chief on the editing and proofreading processes; and working with the designer to make revisions and finalize the issue for printing. The Associate Editor will meet periodically with the Editor-in-Chief via video conference and will attend monthly video conference meetings with the Editor-in-Chief, the Director of Marketing for NAGC (who is the NAGC Liaison for PHP), and any other NAGC or PHP staff as needed.
Term of Service
The term of service coincides with that of the Editor-in-Chief through 2027 and is subject to extension in cooperation with the Editor-in-Chief.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Associate Editor assists in the following steps:
- Recruiting authors and soliciting articles for upcoming issues
- Performing an initial editorial review and recommending further editorial review or desk rejection
- Completing a full editorial review and recommendations of article for content, audience alignment, readability, and member relevance
- Reviewing front cover options and article images
- Conducting a proofread and review of the issue and sharing them with the authors and designer
- Compiling assets for the issue and sending them for printing
Applicant Qualifications
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Knowledge of the field of gifted education
- Desire and ability to dedicate allocated time each week to Associate Editor responsibilities
- Ability to participate in editorial team conference calls
- Previous experience in an editorial role preferred
Professional Membership and Convention Registration. As a benefit of service to PHP and NAGC's mission, the Associate Editor will receive a complimentary NAGC Professional Membership and a complimentary registration to the NAGC Annual Convention for each year of active service.
