Core Policy Positions
Core Policy Principles
The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) is dedicated to advocating for equitably meeting the needs of all gifted and talented learners, and the educators and stakeholders that support them, across the United States. NAGC’s advocacy is rooted in the core belief that education in a democracy must respect the uniqueness of all individuals, the cultural diversity within our society, and the similarities and differences in learning characteristics that can be found within any group of students. Accordingly, the Association’s advocacy and policy efforts, both at the national and state levels, are dedicated to addressing and advancing the following core issues:
- Providing sufficient, equitable, and targeted funding for PreK-12 gifted and talented programs and services across the country, proportionate to need and historically underserved populations.
- Expanding and providing equitable access to appropriately advanced, culturally responsive coursework and enrichment opportunities for all gifted and talented students, inclusive of race, ethnicity, native language, disability, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, dual/thrice exceptionality, or locality.
- Delivering pre-service and on-going in-service, research-based, effective, and equity-driven professional learning opportunities for all educators that impact the lives of gifted and talented students.
- Increasing federal support for gifted students and gifted and talented education, including increased annual funding for the Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Program.
- Growing the number of research-supported, sustainable, and equity-focused gifted and talented programs and services in schools across the country.
