Position Statements and White Papers help clarify issues in gifted and talented education and set NAGC's position on these issues.
Parenting for High Potential (PHP) is an award-winning, full-color, publication of the National Association for Gifted Children. Published 4 times a year in print format, PHP has established an exemplary collection of high-quality information for parents and family members of children with high potential in grades pre-K-12.
Since 1996, PHP has provided practical tools and advice for families allowing them to explore various talent development pathways and destinations with their children.
Most of our readers are members of NAGC. They are parents or teachers of high-ability children (grades pre-K-12), or generally possess a strong desire to develop and maximize children's talents and potential, regardless of whether or not they are formally identified as "gifted." We are focused on providing readers with informative and practical parenting advice and resources for developing gifts and talents in all children.
Direct, concrete articles written in basic conversational English appeal most to our readers. Please avoid jargon and define technical terms when you use them. Write concisely and in the active voice. Please keep in mind that PHP is a magazine, not a scholarly journal, and does not publish theoretical analyses, reviews of research, research reports or other technical articles written in a formal, academic style.
All articles are perr-reviewed, will be edited for conformity to PHP style, readability, and in some cases, content. The editors reserve the right to edit manuscripts in accordance with these guidelines.
A feature article is included in each issue. Each is usually between 2,000 and 3,000 words in length. Feature articles address topics of significant interest or value to our readers, and provide practical guidance for them in developing their children's gifts and talents to the fullest.
Feature articles should: provide readers with practical ways to recognize and nurture many talents and abilities in their children; guide readers in collaborating effectively with educators; suggest new opportunities for appropriate and challenging programming at home, in the community, or in school; or, clarify important questions, issues, and directions confronting parents, children, and educators in relation to gifted and talented programming. Feature articles should relate specifically to the need for appropriate and challenging learning opportunities for students of high potential or performance in any talent areas or domains.
Do not submit articles that have been previously published or currently are under consideration for publication elsewhere. PHP retains the copyright of all articles accepted for publication.
All prospective authors should submit their material electronically. Please include the following in the message:
Include the manuscript as an attachment to the email message, in a current version of Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format.
Use one-inch margins on all sides. Please use a font such as Times, Times New Roman, or Palatino, and do not use unusual or decorative fonts (since these will not be used in the publication, and may delay processing of your material). PHP follows APA Style Guidelines (6th edition).
Manuscripts may be single-spaced with an extra space between paragraphs or headers. You may use bold type for headings, or italics for titles, but refrain from using those for emphasis; we generally avoid the use of underlined text. Do not attach large graphic files or photographs unless we request them. If you are unable to submit your manuscript electronically for any reason, please contact the editor for further instructions.
PHP carries out an extensive review process, with the goal of ensuring that every piece we publish will be as strong as possible. Therefore, do not be surprised or "hurt" to discover that we will ask you for revisions! The Editor initially reviews all articles submitted. The Editorial Advisory Board also reviews all manuscripts, and additional revisions and improvements frequently result from their comments and suggestions. The review process can require six to eight weeks (depending on the time required for you to carry out the proposed revisions).
We cannot return unsolicited material that is submitted in hard copy or on disk. The editorial office will acknowledge receipt of your manuscript, and the Editor-in-chief will contact you regarding the results of the review process. Please note: We regret that our limited budget does not enable us to pay authors for their articles.
