NAGC and Feynman School Hosting Parent Day

The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) and Feynman School are hosting a Parent Day this Saturday, March 6, 9AM to 3PM, at Feynman School, 6300 Tilden Lane, North Bethesda, MD.

“This event offers parents the opportunity to network with leading researchers,” said M. RENÉ ISLAS, NAGC Executive Director. “Families can gain invaluable insight, resources, and information. ”

JONATHAN PLUCKER, Johns Hopkins University, will offer his perspective on Success in College and Life. Dr. Plucker’s colleague, KERI GUILBAULT, will present A Parent's Guide to Academic Acceleration.

East Carolina University’s BRIAN HOUSAND will explore strategies for easily integrating student curiosity into everyday experiences during the Fueling Creativity and Innovation session.

JOY LAWSON DAVIS, a professor at Virginia Union University and the award-winning author of  Bright, Talented & Black, will lead two sessions: Parenting the Gifted: Striking a Balance between Intellectual & Affective Needs and Raising & Nurturing Socially Conscious Gifted Youth.

“There are many academically gifted children in the DC area and Feynman School is pleased to partner with the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) in order to help parents navigate on this amazing journey of discovery to help these gifted learners achieve their maximum potential,” said SUSAN GOLD, Head of Feynman School.

A hands-on workshop, The Poetry of Science and the Science of Poetry, presented by ALI YOUSEF, will provide tools and techniques which allow students to express and explore scientific ideas through poetry. The Home and School Meaningful Math session with REBECCA KLEMM will look at the real uses of math that make the often dry subject meaningful and enhances classroom curriculum. 

The How Executive Functioning Challenges Present in Gifted Children with JULIE SKOLNICK will offer strategies for addressing and strengthening executive functioning.

Fueling Creativity and Innovation
Presented by Brian Housand

Curiosity is an essential skill for creative success and a trait that gifted children possess in abundance, but a typical classroom often leaves little space for students' questions. While inquisitive individuals have long been warned that “curiosity killed the cat”, it is precisely that level of incessant wonderment and investigation that fuels creativity and innovation. In this session, we will explore strategies for easily integrating student curiosity into everyday experiences. Participants will be provided with a Pandora’s box of intriguing puzzlements to ignite students’ interests and strategies to help propel them towards creative productivity.

Brian Housand is an assistant professor and co-coordinator of the Academically and Intellectually Gifted Program at East Carolina University. Dr. Housand earned a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at the University of Connecticut’s National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented with an emphasis in both gifted education and instructional technology.

The Poetry of Science and the Science of Poetry
Presented by Ali Yousef

In this hands-on workshop, we present tools and techniques which allow students to express and explore scientific ideas through poetry. Poetry invites attention to and experimentation with words and their meanings. When students think deeply about the meanings of words, statements, and sentences, they gain better understanding of subjects. Suggested scientific concepts, complementary poetry lessons, and sample poems will be provided to incorporate into class work or homework. We cover topics ranging from physics and engineering to chemistry and biology.

Dr. Ali studied Theoretical Physics and Cosmology for his doctoral degree and later did his post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine in the field of Medical Device designing. He continues to teach and supervise student research projects while managing some of the largest CTY sites, including F&M College and Princeton University.

A Parent's Guide to Academic Acceleration
Presented by Kerri Guilbault

Acceleration is one of the most effective research-based interventions for highly capable gifted learners. Learn how to determine which of the 20 types of acceleration outlined in A Nation Empowered may be right for your child and how to work effectively with your school to secure an appropriate academic placement that matches your child’s ability, interests, and readiness to learn. Myths will be dispelled with an overview of the research on acceleration and lessons learned from families of accelerated learners.

Keri M. Guilbault, Ed.D. is an assistant professor of Gifted Education at Johns Hopkins University. She graduated from the University of South Florida with her master’s degree in Gifted Education and obtained her Ed.S. and doctorate degree in Educational Leadership with specialization in gifted education program administration from the University of Central Florida. 

Parenting the Gifted: Striking a Balance between Intellectual & Affective Needs
Presented by Joy Lawson Davis

In this competitive and openly social society, gifted learners often feel undue pressure to succeed academically without much concern for their affective health. This session will provide strategies parents may use to balance students' intellectual and affective needs by paying attention to the whole gifted child

Joy Lawson Davis is a career educator with over 40 years of experience as a practitioner, scholar, author and consultant. She is currently an Associate Professor of Education and Chair of the Department of Teacher Education at Virginia Union University. A graduate of the College of William & Mary Dr. Davis holds both master’s and doctorate degrees in Gifted Education.

Home and School Meaningful Math
Presented by Rebecca Klemm

Whatever lessons are part of the school day curriculum, there are complementary activities you can work on together at home to make math meaningful.  Making connections to the world around is the reason for the human development of what has become mathematics.  Real uses of math makes the often dry subject meaningful and enhances classroom curriculum.  During the session learn about and discuss options and ideas to bring the classroom into your family life and vice versa.   

Rebecca Klemm, PhD, is an accomplished mathematician, statistician, world traveler, teacher, entrepreneur and inventor.  After teaching at Georgetown University and running her own research firm for many years, she founded NumbersAlive! to share her love of numbers to learners of all ages. 

Raising & Nurturing Socially Conscious Gifted Youth
Presented by Joy Lawson Davis

Today, more than ever, gifted learners are taking on leadership roles as they are exposed to the numerous concerns of communities, near and far. As very sensitive and empathic beings, gifted children are very inclined to question decision makers as well as adults in their own environment about issues of social, environmental, political and human rights concerns. This session will provide strategies and resources parents and educators can use to engage the social justice needs of gifted children and youth.

What is Executive Functioning? How do challenges with executive functioning present in gifted minds? How does the external world work against strengthening executive functions and what are strategies for addressing and strengthening executive functioning? This session will answer these questions and provide an opportunity for questions from participants.

Julie F. Skolnick, M.A., J.D. is Founder and President of With Understanding Comes Calm, LLC, a service supporting parents of, educators of and adults who are “Gifted & Distractible.” Julie is Director of Community Outreach for Camp Summit for the Gifted.

Success in College and Life: A Professor's Perspective
Presented by Jonathan Plucker

Even talented students often struggle in the transition to college, and many students do not make the best of the opportunities at the university level. What distinguishes a "good" college experience from a "bad" one? What are some strategies for making the most of a college education? What strategies can be put in place in K-12 education to help prepare for a successful college experience? How can college be used as a springboard to success in graduate school and life? This session will tackle all of these questions.

Jonathan Plucker is the Julian C. Stanley Professor of Talent Development at Johns Hopkins University. His work defining and studying the excellence gap is part of a larger effort to re-orient the thinking of policymakers and educators toward how to best promote success and high achievement for all children.
