NAGC Doctoral Student Awards

The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) annually presents the Doctoral Student Award to a maximum of five doctoral students who have demonstrated exemplary work in research, publications, and educational service, as well as their potential for future scholarship. University faculty members are invited to nominate candidates for this award.

The 2010 Annual Awards process is closed. Stay tuned for the results. The 2010 Awards Ceremony will be held during our 57th Annual Convention in Atlanta, Georgia (November 11-14, 2010).

Submission Procedure & Checklist

The NAGC national office will make every effort to contact those who have nominated a colleague to let them know of any missing materials, provided the nomination packet arrives at least two weeks before the deadline. The following materials must be postmarked by April 19, 2010:

  • NAGC Award Nomination Form completed by the nominating faculty member . 
  • One letter of support from the faculty member submitting the nomination that details why the nominee would be an appropriate recipient of the award.
  • A minimum of two letters of recommendation (from other than the person submitting the nomination) from persons who have the ability to judge the graduate work done by the nominee.
  • Letters may be mailed separately from the nomination packet. All letters must be signed and e-mails will not be accepted.
  • Vita and/or supporting documents for the nominee.
  • Scholarly Productivity: a copy of at least one first-authored article on gifted and talented education accepted in a peer reviewed journal should be submitted.
  • Please do not use staples when preparing your nomination materials.
  • Nomination materials postmarked after April 19, 2010 will not be considered.

Selection Criteria

Potential for future scholarship by the nominee as demonstrated through:

  • Membership in professional organizations in gifted education.
  • Presentations to professional groups.
  • Research, publications, and educational service.
  • Scholarly productivity.

Restrictions

  • An individual may receive this award once.
  • The nominee must be: enrolled in a doctoral-level training program focusing on the education of the gifted and talented, or have been graduated from such a program since January 2010 (some exceptions can be made for international candidates; please contact NAGC if this graduation date affects your eligibility).
  • No more than two nominees from a single university will be given awards in any one year.

Selection Procedure

  • All materials should be sent to the Chair of the Awards Committee in care of the NAGC National Office. 
  • The Chair will compile data regarding nomination and distribute this information to the NAGC Awards Committee for review. The Committee will submit its recommendation to the Board of Directors.
  • The recipient(s) of the award, in additional to other applicants, will be notified of the Awards Committee's decision in writing no later than August 31, 2010.

Award

The award recipient will receive a check and a plaque presented in November 2010 at the NAGC Annual Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as a one-year membership to NAGC.
