Comparison of NAGC-CEC Teacher Preparation Standards to State Standards

The Knowledge and Skills Sets in the NAGC-CEC Standards are explicitly aligned with the Interstate New Teacher and Assessment and Support Consortium's (INTASC) Model Standards for Teacher licensure. The Teacher Standards for Gifted Education are organized into 10 domain areas that parallel the domain areas of each of the 10 INTASC Core Principles.

This close alignment supports states in using the NAGC-CEC Standards as they develop state standards for licensure of teachers in gifted and talented education.

The NAGC-CEC Standards are written in two tiers, Content Standards and the Knowledge and Skills Sets, which have been developed to meet a variety of state licensure frameworks. The 10 Content Standards are written at a more general level and do not delineate the differences between competencies needed by teachers of gifted and talented students and teachers of students with other exceptionalities. This level of specificity is found in the Knowledge and Skills Sets, which describe what the teacher needs to know and be able to do in serving individuals with gifts and talents.

We have provided a chart showing the alignment of the NAGC-CEC Teacher Preparation Standards in Gifted Education with INTASC standards.  We have also included two worksheets that allow comparison of state standards with the NAGC-CEC Teacher Preparation Standards.
