Mission
The Conceptual Foundations Network believes that a strong conceptual and theoretical framework is needed for the field of gifted education to advance. Their mission is to focus on theory; concepts of giftedness; philosophical foundations; trends, issues, and future directions for the field; historical perspectives; and perspectives from outside the field in order to provide the longitudinal, conceptual, and structural frame from which the field can build appropriate curriculum, identify students, and do research. Specifically, the Network: 1) works toward developing coherent frameworks that can serve as foundations for the field of gifted education; 2) encourages presentation of topics that relate to the five areas of mission; 3) cooperates with other Networks with similar missions or interests to develop joint activities; 4) disseminates information to interested parties thorough publications; 5) encourages graduate programs and students in gifted education to include conceptual foundations in plans of study; and 6) provides a structure that can guide practice and research through examining assumptions, concepts, definitions, and models.

A little bit about this year's honoree
Alexinia Y. Baldwin is Emeritus Professor of the University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT, Department of Curriculum and Instruction where she served as Department Head and Professor of Curriculum and Education of the Gifted. She has been a dedicated advocate for the needs of all gifted children while focusing most of her concerns on students from minority groups. These concerns had their root in her opportunity to become the teacher of the first class of gifted black students in a large southern town. During her tenure as a professor at the State University of New York at Albany, she organized and became the first president of the Association for Gifted and Talented Education in the State of New York (AGATE). She has served as the President of The Association for Gifted (TAG), board member of NAGC, and USA delegate for the World Council for Gifted and Talented (WCGT). Her publications have appeared in many books and journals and have focused on gifted underserved students; their identification and curriculum needs in the classrooms. Her co-edited book, The Many Faces of Giftedness: Lifting the Mask, addressed theses concerns and her Baldwin Identification Matrix has been used in many school districts to assist in identifying these students. She received the 2004 Distinguished Scholar award from NAGC and the Advocate of the Year Award given by the Association for the Education of Gifted Underachieving Students (AEGUS) for 2004. She has traveled extensively as a consultant and lecturer in this area of concern and is continuing her writing and research in this field.
Join us for the taping and learn more about this humanitarian and trailblazer. All NAGC Convention attendees are encouraged to attend. The event is scheduled to be held in the Georgia Ballroom at the Georgia World Congress Center. Have questions? Please send an email to Abbey Cash.
