The Acadia Institute of Oceanography is a hands-on summer science program where young people are offered a unique oceanographic experience on the coast of Maine. For 33 years, AIO has offered a field-oriented program with activities at rocky tidal pools, estuaries, beaches and on-board boat. In our working wet laboratory we conduct experiments in plankton identification, sand dollar embryology, shark and squid dissections as well as setting up salt water tanks. In addition, students are challenged to explore possible future careers in marine science.
Graduates of our advanced sessions can apply for our 9 day tropical program in Belize or our Florida Career Seminar, both offered in November.
Students who have attended AIO tell us that not only do they acquire a background in the marine sciences, but find that they improve their overall skills in biology, chemistry and geology. And, we are proud to say, many of our students decide to pursue careers in the field of Oceanography and continue their studies in college.
