WCATY is the only statewide, year-round organization in Wisconsin dedicated to serving gifted students. WCATY's mission is to nurture academically talented students by providing programs that support, motivate, and challenge them. Financial aid is available for Wisconsin students.
Summer Program, Grades 9-12: The Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) gives gifted high school students the chance to learn and live alongside each other on the beautiful University of Wisconsin - Madison campus. While the campus is big, ALP is limited to 100 students and centers around an engaged and intimate learning environment. Students enroll in just one class during the three-week period for an in-depth focus not possible in crowded high school schedules. Above all, ALP students are carefully selected to cultivate an optimal learning environment where gifted students can interact, learn, and grow with each other. 2012 Courses: Abnormal Psychology, Advanced English Composition, Computer Science, Decision '12, Global Economic Systems, Introduction to Critical Reasoning, Number Theory, Policymaking and the Law, The Human Body and Disease, and The Science of Sustainability.
Summer Program, Grades 7-8: The Summer Transitional Enrichment Program (STEP) gives an opportunity for students, who are finishing grades 7-8, to spend two weeks on a college campus studying one accelerated course. STEP is designed to engage, intellectually challenge, and inspire. It offers a learning atmosphere that nurtures students’ talents and abilities, enriches social life, and encourages creativity. WCATY strives to balance the academic and recreational sides of camp. This program is for those who are ready for above grade level challenge and are serious about having fun in and outside of the classroom with peers who share similar aspirations and interests. 2012 Courses: Acting Up, Advanced Image Manipulation, Become a Chemist, Forensic Science, Journalism, Law 101, Mysteries of the Mind, Robotics, and Writing, Creatively.
Summer Program, Grades 4-6: The Young Student Summer Program (YSSP) allows young learners in grades 4-6 to enjoy the novelty of having just one class with motivated classmates in a subject area they love. Each class is small and designed to enrich learning and introduce new disciplines, helping students expand their knowledge about the world and discover how much there truly is to learn. As students adjust to the summer camp atmosphere, they gain personal independence and connect with other bright students on a deeper level. 2012 Courses: A Week in Japan, Can You Dig It?, Considering Everyday Chemistry, Fit to Print, Introduction to Digital Art and Photography, Pets' Vets, Physics, Space Travel and Exploration, and Write It!
Online Classes, Grades 5-8: One of the most innovative online solutions for gifted children available today is the WCATY Academy. The Academy combines online instruction with face-to-face workshops allowing academically talented students to interact in a gifted learning community. The Academy offers a robust and distinctive curriculum created by our instructors and content developers using WCATY’s research-based online curriculum design system. Each nine-week credit class is designed to replace a district’s classroom offerings with cross-curricular, gifted-focused content. (Limited to Wisconsin students.) |
